Testing Thermal Shrinkage of Plastic Film and Sheeting

Heat shrinkable materials are valued for their ability to conform tightly to various shapes when heated. From protective packaging to crucial electrical insulation, their applications are across diverse industries.

The unique properties of heat shrinkable materials make them indispensable in numerous applications, such as packaging or bundling products, creating tamper-evident seals, electrical insulation component protection, identification and labeling, and using in various medical applications.



To characterize the properties of heat shrinkable materials several tests are employed.

One of the fundamental tests measures the degree to which a material shrinks when exposed to heat is the shrinkage testing. ASTM D2732 Standard Test Method for Unrestrained Linear Thermal Shrinkage of Plastic Film and Sheeting provides a standardized procedure. This test is applicable to determining suitability for packaging, labeling, and protective coverings.

Shrink Force/Contraction Force Testing specified in ISO 14616 measures the force exerted by the material as it shrinks. This is vital for applications where the film or tubing needs to apply pressure, such as bundling items or creating tight seals. This test is applicable to evaluating suitability for bundling, securing components, and creating tamper-evident seals.



Labthink C631H Thermal Shrinkage Tester is designed and developed in accordance with ISO 14616 and GB/T 34848, for determination of shrinking force, contracting force and shrinkage ratio of heat shrinkable films. Shrinking force greater than 0.01N can be detected.

Adhering to these standards and conducting the appropriate tests ensures consistent product quality and performance. Understanding the characteristics of the heat shrinkable films also helps in optimizing material formulations and processing parameters, and selecting the right material for a specific application.
